Stealing Time from a Toddler

A jar filled with pom poms has been the latest god-send when I need to entertain Tess for a few minutes to get something done. Granted, it really is only a few minutes, but that stretches her attention span to capacity so I call it a major win. The thing is that she's at an age where she craves mess and chaos. So the trick is to channel that energy into something that's not horrible to clean up. Pom poms do the trick.

I can't help but think about how the principle of accepting her inclinations and working around them applies to me too. It reminds me of an idea from Elizabeth Gilbert in Big Magic (great book btw):
It has taken me years to learn this, but it does seem to be the case that if I am not actively creating something, then I am probably actively destroying something (myself, a relationship, or my own peace of mind.)
Tess isn't the only one that can get destructive if she doesn't have something to do. :)
